Case Study

Eleanor Vilimaite

Front end Developer to Junior Developer at Career Interactive

It's been good. I've met a lot of different people.

What were you doing before joining Makers Academy?

I was working as a front end developer at a startup called Tibit.

What made you want to start learning to code in the first place?

I started doing front end as it's fun to use and easy to impress people who don't know about code. I like to build stuff.

How did you come across Makers Academy and what made you decide to apply?

The lead developer at Tibit came to Makers Academy also my mum found out about Makers and was the driving force behind me coming here.

What did you find difficult during the course?

I found working with people and having to explain everything I do at every stage of development starting from why I'm naming my variable and why I use that particular if statement difficult to get used too.

What happened during/after graduation and where are you job-wise?

I have a frontend job at Career Interactive and the opportunity to move into backend later.

What advice would you give to people thinking of changing career?

Make sure that you really enjoy what you've chosen.

What do you say to people who say £8000 is expensive?

It's worth it. You get to meet people and work in a different environment and learn A LOT. £8k is cheap compared to university.

What was your biggest worry before joining Makers Academy and how do you feel about it now?

I wouldn't find it useful and that I'd been bored. Sometimes I knew more than others but that levelled out towards the end of the course. There were lots of peer teaching opportunities.

Sum up your Makers Academy experience

It's been good. I've met a lot of different people. The cohort was very diverse. It's been quite surreal experience.
